It is not easy to find such nature as at the foot of the mountains Južni Kučaj and Beljanica, at the source of river Grza, in the ecologically and historically protected area where village Izvor and the well of “Saint Petka of the Spring” are located. This area became known by the nearby monastery Saint Petka, where legends and popular believes has been assigning healing powers to the water for centuries.

It cannot be said with precision who and how built the monastery, but the legends date back for centuries, to the times of medieval Serbia and King Milutin and Princess Milica of Serbia. According to popular belief, in the first half of XV century, when the monastery was demolished, the spring of this holy water was closed by the Ottomans to stop people from gathering at this place. In the past this area was known as “Resava valley Holy Mountain” because of 12 medieval Orthodox monasteries that were located there. Only three of them remained fully preserved to this day, among them, the most significant is monastery Ravanica built at the foot of Kučaj Mountain as the endowment of Prince Lazar of Serbia. Cultural and historical heritage of this region is exceptionally rich and diverse, attracting great number of archeologists, anthropologists and culturologists.

Natural treasures and beauties of hilly mountainous terrain, diversity of plant and animal wildlife, rivers and thick forests, don’t fall behind rich historic heritage of the region. Lavish vegetation and lack of inhabitants provide safe resort for many animal species. Hunting grounds of this area can boast with great numbers of wild boars, deer, roe deer, wildcats, hares, pheasants and quails. Rivers are inhabited by many species of fish, typical for mountain rivers.

If water and time haven’t shaped it turning it in an area of incredible beauty, Beljanica Mountain would remain an inconspicuous limestone massif. Powerful wellsprings breaking out from rocks created remarkable waterfalls, while over thousands of years of sculpting, water left marvelous jewelry hidden in darkness of great number of caves.

In the extended area there are no industrial activities or biological and chemical pollutants which could jeopardize this precious natural resource. Furthermore, ground water collector is additionally protected by specific type of water-impermeable sediments.
